Today Alappuzha has grown in importance as a backwater tourist centre, attracting several thousands of tourists each year. Alappuzha is also famous for its boat races, houseboat holidays, beaches, marine products, and coir industry. A singular characteristic of this land is a region called Kuttanad. A land of lush paddy fields, Kuttanad is also called the Rice Bowl of Kerala and is one of the few places in the world where farming is done below sea level.

By Rail
The railway station is situated 5 km from the bus station and ferry station. (Enquiries. Ph: 2253965, 2253865)

By Road
Road: Alappuzha is connected by good motorable roads to all parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Bus Timings
Bangalore: 14.00 (17 hrs)
Coimbatore: 06.15 (7 hrs)
Kochi: Frequent buses (1½ hrs)
Thiruvananthapuram: Frequent buses (3 ½ hrs)
Kollam:  Buses going to Thiruvananthapuram passes through Kollam (2 hrs)
There are also buses to Kottayam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Kozhikode.

Ferry Services
The ferry station (Ph:0477 - 2252015) and bus station are close to each other. The ferry boats from Alappuzha passes through scenic backwaters.

Kottayam: 07.30, 10.00, 11.30, 13.10, 14.30,
17.30 (3hrs.)
Changanassery: 10.00, 13.45, 17.30 (3 hrs)
Nedumudy: Frequent (1 hr)
Kollam: At present there is no public ferry.

Backwater tours

The District Tourism Promotion Council, Kollam and the Alleppey Tourism Development Co-operative Society operate daily backwater cruises during September to March. The tour starts at 10.30 a.m. from Alappuzha and reaches Kollam at 6 pm. and the charge is Rs. 300/-. There are frequent buses from Kochi  to Alappuzha and it takes 1½ hours for the journey.

Local ferries are operated by the State Water Transport Department to different islands through scenic backwaters.
